Justin Umel, LCSW, MSW
I’m Justin, a seasoned Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), humanitarian, amateur musician, and lifelong martial artist having studied several styles including Karate, Afro-Brazilian art of Capoeira, and the Filipino Martial Arts, referred to as “Kali”, “Escrima”, or “Arnis.” Ever since I was a child, I’ve felt a calling. With a passion for social justice, this calling has lead me on an enduring mission to help others in various capacities.
I graduated from the University of Maine, first in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work, then again in 2010 with a Master’s Degree in Social Work, with a clinical focus. I have nearly a decade in the helping field with a variety of Social Work experience working with clients of diverse backgrounds, needs and abilities, in areas ranging from Mental Health/Community Integrations case management, to community building and teaching English as a foreign language in rural Mexico, to direct clinical experience as a psychotherapist in an inpatient psychiatric hospital, and a counselor in a residential life skills program for young men.
With my knowledge and experience in several clinical modalities of psychotherapy combined with my years of experience in traditional martial arts styles, I have enhanced my life and therapeutic philosophies to develop an effective holistic approach to therapy. This is what I offer.
I work with an emphasis on the development of individualized mental and emotional tools and strategies. Through a mixture of traditional “talk therapy” as well as martial-movement/music based creative expression exercises/meditations, I aid the client in developing a truly holistic “tool box” of self-empowerment for addressing a variety of mental/emotional health and social issues, including, but not limited to;
Depression • Anxiety • Anger Management • Stress Reduction • Low Self-Esteem/Confidence • Lack of direction • Trauma • Grief Bereavement • Motivation • Interpersonal communication • Relationships • Distress Tolerance • Addiction • Phobias
